Stokenham
Tucked back from the main coastal road between Kingsbridge and Dartmouth lies the pretty little village of Stokenham. Set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty surrounded by rolling countryside yet less than a mile from the coast, it makes a great location for a holiday in The South Hams. For a small village, Stokenham has lots to offer.
Within less than 5 minutes walk from Hall House, and on the village green, are The Tradesman’s Arms and Church House Inn, with picturesque beer gardens and tasty menus. Stokely Farm Food Market, Deli, Restaurant, Bar & Garden Centre, is also only a short walk. Their new Tap House, where you can drink a freshly brewed range of draft and bottled beers as well as their own Hop Head Gin, is open late during the summer and hosts live music and food events.
Less than a mile away is Slapton Ley Nature Reserve. The largest natural lake in the South West, it is only separated from Slapton Sands by a narrow shingle bar yet is entirely freshwater. The Ley is a haven for birds and a variety of wildlife and is a lovely place to take a leisurely stroll to see how many species you can spot. Slapton Sands, a 3-mile long pebble beach running from Torcross, with the beach-side Start Bay Inn serving famous local fish and chips and seafood specialities, is a dog-friendly beach with no seasonal restrictions. The South West Coast Path can be joined at Torcross, offering miles and miles of stunning coastal walks with access to many more picturesque but rugged beaches ideal for swimming, kayaking, sea fishing and if lucky seal watching.
The lively waterside market town of Kingsbridge is a short six-mile drive or bus ride away, offering a great selection of independent shops, supermarkets, bars and restaurants, whilst one of Devon’s most beautiful blue flag beaches, Blackpool Sands, is just five miles in the opposite direction. The historic port town of Dartmouth lies a little further beyond and is well worth a day trip.
With several fantastic beaches and four great pubs on its doorstep, plus easy access to The South’s Hams bustling towns, a holiday in Stokenham ticks all the boxes.
